Questions
What is tatting?
Tatting is a way of making lace from tiny knots, worked with a small shuttle and thread. I tat every piece in the shop by hand in my studio in the North Yorkshire countryside. Because each one is made by hand, small variations are normal.
How do I look after my lace jewellery?
Keep it away from water, perfume and lotion, and store it flat. A good habit is to put your jewellery on last, after perfume and hand cream.
Is there metal in your jewellery? I have a metal allergy.
About the metal in the jewellery. The clasps, ear hooks, studs and chains (the “findings”) are a base-metal alloy. I don’t know the exact composition of the findings or of the metallic thread. They may contain nickel or other metals, so they aren’t suitable if you have a metal or nickel allergy. The lace rings have no metal clasps or bands, though the Ophelia ring uses metallic thread. Each piece’s materials list says whether it uses metallic thread.
Do your pieces contain nickel?
Metal findings may contain traces of nickel. If you have a nickel allergy, please get in touch before ordering. The lace rings have no metal clasps or bands, though Ophelia uses metallic thread. The Blanche ring is made with non-metallic thread and glass beads.
What ring sizes do you have?
The sizes ready to ship are shown on each ring, and that list changes when a size sells. Other UK sizes are made to order in 3–5 weeks. The Ophelia garnet ring is a wide band, so choose half a size up if you are between sizes. Choose Other size and tell me your UK size. If a listed size sells out, that size can still be made to order.
Will a bracelet fit me?
For Cordelia, Ophelia and Perdita, measure your wrist. A wrist of 14–14.5 cm takes a 16 cm bracelet, 15–15.5 cm takes 17 cm, 16–16.5 cm takes 18 cm, 17–17.5 cm takes 19 cm, and 18–18.5 cm takes 20 cm. Ready to ship: Cordelia 17 cm, Perdita 17 cm and the Ophelia bracelet 19 cm, one of each. Other sizes are made to order in 2–3 weeks. The Nocturne bracelet is one adjustable size, 17 cm plus a 5 cm extension chain, so it fits about 17–22 cm. One is ready to ship, and further bracelets are made to order in 2–3 weeks.
What is the difference between Ready to ship and Made to order?
Ready-to-ship pieces are already made. Order by 2pm, Monday to Saturday, and they’re posted in 1–2 working days, Monday to Saturday. Made-to-order pieces are tatted for you after you order. They usually take 2–5 weeks, depending on the piece. Bracelets take 2–3 weeks. Rings take 3–5 weeks. Necklaces take 3–5 weeks. Once it’s posted, transit is 2–3 days, Monday to Saturday. Can you make a piece in my colours, or something new?
Yes. I take commissions for earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings, in your colours, size or style, and matching sets. Commissions start from £45 and most take 3 to 6 weeks. See the Commissions page to send your idea.
Is it ready to give as a gift?
Yes. Every piece is carefully wrapped and packed to arrive safely. Packaging may vary depending on the piece. You can ask for the parcel to go to another address, and the packing slip does not show the price. Email hello@jingsthings.co.uk and tell me the address you’d like it sent to.
